The city of Cambridge is the administrative headquarters for the entire county of Cambridgeshire. The city is just 50 miles from London and has a range of jobs in the public sector, most notably in the University. However, there are also retail sector jobs with hi-tech employment also on offer thanks to the region’s Silicon Fen region. Here are 10 of the best companies to work in the city of Cambridge, in no particular order.

10: Abcam

This is a biotech company which is located in Cambridge Science Park. It was founded in 1998 with Jonathan Milner the current CEO. It is one of the world’s largest retailers of research antibodies and has almost 250 employees. The company’s profit was an impressive £16 million in 2009.

9: CSR

CSR stands for Cambridge Silicon Radio and is a fabless semiconductor company who create location and audio chips. CSR was founded when it moved away from Cambridge Consultants in 1998. Six years later, CSR was on the London Stock Exchange. The company merged with SiRF in 2009 with the deal estimated to be worth in excess of $136 million.

8: ARM Limited

This is a multinational semiconductor and software organisation which has its headquarters in the city of Cambridge. It generates the most revenue from processors though it is also in the business of software development tools. The company was founded in 1990 and has more than 1,700 employees with an annual revenue in excess of £400 million.

7: CamSemi

This company’s full name is actually Cambridge Semiconductor Limited and it deals in fabless semiconductors just like CSR. The Cambridge University Engineering Department came up with seed money and created this company back in 2002. Products made by CamSemi are helping manufacturers of power supplies to comply with the European code of conduct for energy-efficiency, Energy Star.

6: Marshall Aerospace

This company has its headquarters at Cambridge Airport. It has more than 1,800 employees and enjoys an annual revenue of £250 million. Marshall Aerospace covers all design, maintenance, manufacture, conversion and modification of business, commercial and military aircraft. The company was originally founded in 1909 and works on a number of projects around the world.

5: Autonomy Corporation

This software company has headquarters in Cambridge and San Francisco and is one of Hewlett-Packard’s subsidiaries. It was founded in 1996 and has an annual revenue of more than £500 million. The company was independent until October 2011 when Hewlett-Packard acquired it.

4: Jagex

This is a games studio which is the biggest independent publisher and developer of games in the United Kingdom. RuneScape is probably Jagex’s best known video game but it has created more than 40 others. The company was founded in 2001 and currently has more than 450 employees. Its headquarters are located at Silicon Fen in Cambridge.

3: Sinclair Research

This is a company that was founded in Cambridge in 1973. It did not actually start trading for three years and only became known as Sinclair Research in 1981. It once created home computers in the UK but has since moved on to other areas of electronics. The X-1 electric vehicle is one of its latest innovations and was released in 2011.

This is a branch of Microsoft that is dedicated to research. It has some of the most brilliant scientific minds working there including a variety of Turing Award winners. This research company focuses on various broad areas of science including Social Computing, Software Development, Hardware Development and Machine Learning, intelligence and adaptation.

This is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities. It also has thousands of employees who work in the various departments. There are a number of opportunities in the field of education among the other colleges that are part of the whole University complex. It should also be noted that the college employs people in other areas because of the need to provide staff and students with services.
