Job Description
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
We are looking to recruit an experienced software developer to support our team in the delivery of solutions for site wide tracking of samples and lab ware. The production software team provides software solutions for large scale experimental pipelines for DNA analysis as part of an extensive scientific infrastructure: including Sequencing, Genotyping, Sample Logistics, large scale PCR and others which support and drive significant numbers of projects both internally and externally.
The successful applicant will be working on our in-house tool suite for project management, capacity planning and laboratory process. This suite is based on a collection of tools for supporting research workflow and laboratory processes. He/she will be working closely with users to ascertain their requirements. Additionally he/she will be required to design and implement reusable software solutions.
The role has a high level of responsibility and flexibility and it will provide great opportunities for professional development.
Essential Skills
€¢ A Computer Science degree
€¢ Worked with Ruby on Rails or other web framework.
€¢ As comfortable with writing native JavaScript as with building on frameworks.
€¢ Semantic HTML, CSS, browsers.
€¢ Debugging tools.
€¢ Setting up and running automated front-end test suites, preferably using Selenium.
€¢ Understanding of the full web app stack. Database abstraction, request modelling, templating, URL mapping.
€¢ Agile processes, test-driven development, estimation.
€¢ Usability testing
€¢ Protecting against browser and web app security exploits.
€¢ Performance optimisation around HTTP requests, bandwidth, rendering, script execution.
€¢ Web service development, authentication, oAuth, JSONP, XML parsing.
€¢ Unix command line and source control, preferably Subversion/Git.
€¢ Strong communication skills.
Ideal Skills
Experience with financial, logistic or other time critical systems would be an advantage. Knowledge of genetics is a strong plus but not essential.
Other information
Candidates without Rails experience are also welcome but must have comparable experience in another language or framework. An ability to quickly learn new software techniques and research methods is essential.
