Job Description
We are looking for a trainee animal technician to provide husbandry and welfare care for the animals housed primarily within the Research Support Facility (RSF). This state of the art facility provides a dedicated animal barrier and containment facility giving provision for the housing and utilization of model organisms in genetics research.
You will be working as part of a dedicated team providing high standards of animal care and providing assistance to the facility users. You will assist in the husbandry and welfare of the species housed in the RSF. You will also participate in maintaining mouse breeding colonies and experimental groups using IVC technology.
Essential Skills
Comfortable handling and being around animals
Good basic literacy and numeracy skills
Ability to keep neat and accurate records
Good manual dexterity
Able to follow set procedures
Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people
Ideal Skills
Experience of caring for animals
Computer literate
Other information
Participating in weekend/public holiday rota (maximum 1 weekend in 3) to ensure the RSF is satisfactorily maintained at all times.
Occasionally required to work outside normal working hours to fit with RSF User requests.
Participate in suitable training programmes.
The work involves some lifting and much of the day is spent standing so applicants need to be physically fit for this to comply with Institute Policies and health & safety legislation.
This position is fixed-term for maternity cover. Due to the nature of the contract no minimum or maximum period of employment can be guaranteed. You should be aware the maximum period of maternity leave available to our employees is 12 months.
