Job Description
Salary range £21115 to £27999 pa dependent on experience
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
Applications are invited for the post of Advanced Research Assistant in the Malaria Genetics Team, lead by Dominic Kwiatkowski.
A major focus in the team is to develop public health tools to identify, understand, and control antimalarial drug resistance, based on next generation sequencing of malaria parasites from clinical samples collected throughout the malaria-endemic world.
The postholder will be responsible for pre-sequencing DNA sample processing, including sample reception and archiving, quality control, submission to sequencing pipelines, and database maintenance. The ability to developing strong lines of communication with internal and external partners regarding sample qc and processing is essential. Supporting experimental lab work, including parasite culturing, and molecular and cell biology assays will also be part of the role. The poster holder will also be expected to help in the day to day running of the laboratory. Further details of the post are provided in the attached role profile.
This post is an exciting opportunity for someone who is motivated by the opportunity to work in a supporting role in a cutting-edge area of science, making an impact on one of the world’s most serious health problems. He/she will work under the supervision of the Project Manager and liaise widely with members of the Malaria Genetics team and other project stakeholders. A positive and flexible attitude is important, and the postholder should have the confidence to work through problems with the support of the rest of the team.
Essential Skills
Experience with DNA handling and sample management in a high-throughput environment is essential. Evidence of strong communication, organization, record keeping, and reporting skills are also essential.
Ideal Skills
Ideal skills include DNA extraction, quantitation, and qPCR amplification methods; quality control and archiving; and experience with sample tracking databases.
Experience with tissue culture and sterile technique are highly desirable. Experience in other modern molecular and cell biology experimental techniques would be an asset.
Other information
The position is offered for three years in the first instance but with the possibility of extension.
