Job Description

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

As part of the Sanger Malaria Programme, the Malaria Genetics team lead by Dominic Kwiatkowski is leveraging next generation sequencing technology to investigate the role of natural genetic variation in host, vector and parasite genomes to malaria biology and pathogenesis. A major focus in the team is developing software tools to identify, understand, and control antimalarial drug and insecticide resistance, based on next generation sequencing of Plasmodium and Anopheles clinical samples collected throughout the malaria-endemic world.

We have a unique opportunity for an experienced programmer to develop and maintain systems for the management and analysis of parasite and vector sequence data. Our work is highly collaborative and the post-holder will work closely with other informatics specialists in our team, and with partners within and beyond the Institute to establish efficient data management pipelines and user-friendly display and analysis tools for next generation sequencing data. As such, strong communication skills and willingness to work collaboratively in a team setting are essential.

Essential Skills The ideal candidate would have a degree in computer science, with proven ability to apply object oriented programming productively in a UNIX/LINUX environment and significant experience programming in Perl and HTML/JavaScript. A more detailed description of required skills and experience is outlined in the role profile.

Ideal Skills A background in biological sciences and work in a genomics research environment would be an asset.
