Job Description

Job Title: Web developer Location: Cambridge Salary: GBP25,000

Web developer

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB To design, create and maintain web-based learning materials and environments, ranging from static HTML to highly interactive and dynamic web sites.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Key tasks

Build and maintain web applications

• €¢ Use PHP, Ajax and other common web technologies to implement fast, robust and easy to maintain web applications

• €¢ Design and implement class models using well-know object-oriented development techniques

• €¢ Design of data models and implementation of databases (mainly MySQL and SQL Server) to support the functionality required

Build web pages

• €¢ Use XHTML, CSS and Javascript to create static web pages using content and assets (images, audio, video, etc.)

• €¢ Produce e-learning materials that will function in a variety of learning environments (knowledge of SCORM an advantage) Development strategy

• €¢ Champion web standards – make sure as many sites as possible adhere to w3c XHTML/CSS/CAG validation

• €¢ Be proactive in solving problems and documenting the solution for future reference

• €¢ Work with version control systems to ensure source code is managed effectively

• €¢ Help us ensure that our work is of the highest quality, taking a \'right first time\' approach and bearing re-usability in mind

Team working

• €¢ Attend project meetings to discuss technical requirements

• €¢ Liaise with project managers to ensure that websites/materials are developed to the correct specification

• €¢ Contribute to multidisciplinary discussions

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

You:

• €¢ have a proven track record with at least four years\' experience of commercial web-based programming

• €¢ enjoy working in a busy multidisciplinary team and are a good team player

• €¢ have excellent time-management skills and can produce high-quality products to tight deadlines

• €¢ have a proven ability to manage multiple priorities while working effectively with others

• €¢ have good interpersonal skills

• €¢ have good knowledge of cross-browser issues

• €¢ are able to document your work clearly

• €¢ have good problem-solving skills

• €¢ have meticulous attention to detail

• €¢ have the ability and desire to learn and research web technologies

• €¢ have the ability to create reusable object-oriented code and designs

• €¢ do not solve problems by reinventing the wheel.

Essential technical skills:

• €¢ 4 years PHP 5, MySQL, Javascript, XHTML, CSS, Ajax

• €¢ Experience with PHP frameworks (preferably Symfony)

• €¢ Experience of working with CMS (preferably Joomla) - from customising templates, to installing 3rd-party components as well developing bespoke components to meet clients’ needs

• €¢ Ability to work with version control systems like SVN in a multi-user setup

• €¢ Strong object-oriented modelling and implementation using design patterns and frameworks

Desirable skills:

• €¢ Java, .NET (C#), UML, Apache, IIS, Linux, Vmware

• €¢ Developing applications for mobile devices
